How many companies forget human factors when it comes to designing for success?
We have designed their office but what about their joy?
In a world where we now hear a lot of talk about ‘wellbeing’, are we actually factoring in ‘time’?
Do we have ‘non work’ time on the list, because actually not doing something might sometimes be productive?
We talk a lot about dopamine hits from technology, but what about from nature and human connection?
Many people have become addicted to the artificial dopamine spikes generated by social media, games, and screens. Let’s shift our focus back to authentic sources of joy. Does your work schedule have moments of ‘joy’ included? How can we create these?
In terms of office design, can we bring the outdoors inside or the inside outside? Spending time outdoors with nature can provide a profound sense of peace and mental wellbeing. Have you looked at biophilic design for your office? What about the green space outside, could we make some into places you could work with clever design?
Meaningful interactions with colleagues are priceless. The laughter, support, and empathy we share create bonds that release natural dopamine, fostering genuine happiness, but have we looked at whether our environmental design or task scheduling is providing opportunity for these interactions?
Exercise releases dopamine, promoting not only physical health but also mental well-being. It’s a natural high that enhances our overall quality of life, so maybe don’t have everything within easy access to the desk. You could allow those that can to walk and split task areas, whilst ensuring that no one is excluded and accessibility is considered.
Today’s challenge is are we including authentic sources of joy and happiness in our work environments, work modes and tasks?
I hope today’s post has you thinking!
