The Media Van Editor

18 months off work after more than a decade of unresolved recommendations

The Person & The Problem

A Media van editor & camera operator:

  • Long drives, heavy kit, editing in the back of a van

Areas of discomfort and human factors:

  • Lower back & hip pain from 2010: cramped pod, knees above hips, twisted sitting posture. He was very tall!
  • 2023: disc injury with nerve compression, neck & arm pain, headaches

The result:

  • Off work for 18 months

What Had Been Tried

Risks Identified, but loosely managed:

  • Occupational Health referrals in 2010 & 2019 correctly identified the risks
  • Physiotherapy recommended and not followed up, until just before our interventions

Support agreed but no follow-ups before it was too late:

  • Workstation modifications recommended, never actioned
  • A replacement van agreed in 2022, delayed, then never delivered
  • No adaptations for 14 years until absence became long term
